In spring 2012, a flurry of kings, noblemen, tyrants, witches, and a drunk will descend on Yale’s campus. The invasion will be part of Shakespeare at Yale, a semester-long celebration of the Bard which will include shows, lectures, exhibits and other events sponsored by nearly every major arts organization on campus as well as several other partners, including the Yale Law School.
The idea for the celebration started with David Kastan, the George M. Bodman Professor of English who came to Yale from Columbia University in 2008. He hopes the event will bring attention to the wealth of Shakespeare available available through the University’s libraries and other collections.
The Theater Studies Program will sponsor four senior project productions of the Bard's works, three of which will be faculty directed, as part of Shakespeare at Yale:
Daniel Larlham will direct Coriolanus, a senior project for actors William Smith and Jesse Kirkland, as part of a course offered in fall 2011. The play will be performed Jan 18-21 at the Whitney Theater.
Sam Lasman will direct Macbeth. The production will be his and actors Jamie Biondi and Katharine Pitt's senior project and will be performed February 2-4 at the Whitney Theater.
Murray Biggs will direct Othello, a senior project for actors Kalyan Ray-Mazumder and Austin Trow, in late February or early April, at a location TBA.
Deb Margolin will direct Hamlet, a senior project for actor Justin Dobies, Tom Sanchez, and Keith Rubin, in February at the Whitney Theater, as part of a course offered in spring 2011.
